Menopause - What Is It and What’s Normal?

Published by Frederick Konig under menopause

What’s Normal?

Women who are menopausal are often more clear about their purpose in life and are less willing to please others ahead of themselves. The first two letters of the word menopause spell “ME.” However menopausal women often have heavy, self chosen or economic responsibilities.

The official graduation from the reproductive years is achieved with a year free of flow. Although about five percent of women will have further spotting or bleeding, no disease reason is likely nor investigation is necessary if a woman feels breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings or weight gain/appetite changes before it. It does, however, redefine her age at menopause and a one-year clock again begins ticking. Women’s quality of life in menopause has improved to the best since before adolescence. She can finally count on physiological stability. Some women (perhaps 10-25%) continue to have hot flushes and night sweats.

Perimenopause - What Is It and What Is Normal?

Published by Frederick Konig under menopause

What’s Normal?

During perimenopause women are often most engaged in work or vocation or may be just getting back to full time work after childcare years. Many changes in relationships, home life and the needs of parents characterize women’s mid-life.

Perimenopause lasts from six to 10 years for most women. This stage begins gradually during regular cycles and ends when a year has passed since the final menstrual period. The onset of perimenopause is different for different women but is characterized by cycles that become closer together. Approximately 25% will begin to have night sweats. An unknown percentage of women with regular cycles will have increased breast tenderness and enlargement. About 20-30% will have abnormally heavy flow for one or more cycles. Most women experience some middle of the night sleep disturbances, mood swings and less ability to predict flow. Some women will experience nausea, new or recurrent and severe migraine headaches ,weight gain and palpitations.

Later stages of perimenopause begin with irregular cycles that may involve alternating short and long cycles. During this portion of perimenopause more women will have night sweats and some will start having daytime hot flushes.

Sleep disturbances may increase and rapid bone loss begins with the onset of irregular cycles. The final year of perimenopause is from the final menstrual period for one year. By then breast tenderness is improving, and hot flushes for some, but sleep disturbances and night sweats/hot flushes are at their maximal.

Premenopause - What Is It and What Is Normal?

Published by Frederick Konig under menopause

The stages of menopause as described by Dr. Jerilynn C. Prior and authority on the subject.
clipped from www.cemcor.ubc.ca

What’s Normal?

Women during the premenopausal years are making choices about education,
vocation and partnerships. They may or may not choose to have children.

This stage of women’s lives lasts from the 20s until menopause. The
premenopausal years make up the bulk of the entire reproductive life span from
menarche to menopause that usually spans 30-45 years. Most menstrual cycles are
predictable, flow lasts about four to six days and cycle lengths vary between
21 and 36 days apart. This is a time of final maturation of ovulation with over
95% of cycles being normally ovulatory with normal luteal phase lengths of 10
or more days. Women who choose to have children have them during these years.
Although cramps are variable between women, usually they improve after the
first childbirth.
