“I can’t live without my cell phone!”

How many of us haven’t said this at one time or another. These gadgets are great! Not only can we make calls and send texts, we can surf the web, take photos and play music.

Some of them even organize our lives for us

But accompanying the hype about cellular phones is the increasing concern as to the possible dangers of this technology.

Environmental groups all over the world are concerned that mobile masts and towers will have a negative impact on their natural surroundings.

Lobbyists are petitioning legislatures to increase the pressure on handset manufactures and telecommunications companies in efforts to make phones and towers safer

Cell phone radiation has been linked to brain tumors

The main reason for this concern is due to the fact that mobile telephony utilises electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range.

No doubt people have drawn a logical conclusion between sticking one’s head in a microwave and the potential dangers of cell phone technology

The foremost authority on human wellbeing – the World Health Organisation, has stated that there is no discernable link between the use of a cell phone and a resulting headache. Handset manufacturers say the same thing but they have just a little less credibility.

Could be something to do with the fact that they have a vested interest in a positive message

All are not convinced though and in some European countries consumer associations have make recommendations on how to reduce exposure to radiation

Use a hands free kit to avoid holding the mobile phone to the head and thereby reduce radiation. Keep the mobile phone away from the body altogether – although there is some confusion as to how this is even possible.

There are others but the list becomes more nonsensical with each suggestion

The side effects of mobile phone use should not be discounted though

It is a certainty that use of a handset will have some impact on its user. The devices give off radio waves and these are absorbed by the body. It is already understood that microwaves have the ability to slightly heat up cells, but there is still no evidence that this can harm us

A Danish study published in 2006, involved researchers following over 400,000 people for a period of 20 years. The main aim of the study was to establish if there were any harmful effects of radiation, what these were and how a mobile phone user’s chances of getting cancer were increased.

The study showed that cell phones did not increase the risk of cancer for any of the users

It would seem therefore, that the evidence is in favor of the handset manufactuers, perhaps you aren’t convinced. After all where there’s smoke, there’s fire

One suggestion for combating the issue of radiation absorption is the use of ferrite beads which are proven to reduce radiation absorption in humans. They act as a means of absorption given that they are made of a semi-magnetic substance

So what’s the verdict?

Well, this gadget lover would say that cell phones are indeed heaven sent. Just be sensible about their use as with everything in life, everything in moderation.

At the very least it’ll lower your phone bill at the end of the month!
