Also known as the silent killer because you can be suffering from without displaying any noticeable symptoms, that is until you drop dead from a stroke or heart attack of course. The most common causes are genetic, high cholesterol, smoking, stress, excessive salt use, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, exposure to heavy metals (not the music) and obesity.

As you age the likelihood of high blood pressure increases, so frequent monitoring is advisable. Left untreated you will die earlier than you should.

High blood pressure is blood pressure over 140 mm/hg systolic and over 90 mm/hg diastolic.

Apart from regular monitoring you might consider incorporating the following into your lifestyle -

Yep, I know some of these doctors stories are better suited amongst the horror movie selections. But there is good news, blood pressure is easily controlled through some simple diet changes, naturally.

Dietary considerations are - eat a high fiber diet (very beneficial in fighting high cholesterol), add garlic, celery, olive oil and fish oil to your diet.

Reduce your caffeine intake - it raises blood pressure. Reduce your salt intake. Avoid soy sauce, MSG and canned veggies. Limit your sugar intake. Also rather include 2% milk, low fat cheese and lean meat in your diet, avoid as much as possible processed foods, eat fresh fruit and vegetables.
