With all the controversy surrounding the Atkins diet - here is why you should go the low carb route.
When deciding on a diet you should consider why you need to diet in the 1st place. What I’m going to attempt here is to show you the best way to follow the atkins diet or low carb diet for that matter.
Do you fit the low carb mold?
If you have type II diabetes or the symptoms of low blood sugar or if these problems is in your genes, the low carb diet is definitely your best choice.
Symptoms of low blood sugar are extreme hunger, nervousness, headaches, etc. or any other symptom that seems to disappear once you’ve eaten. Low carb diets can help to control your blood sugar/insulin levels.
Apart from contributing to obesity, insulin resistance has been proven to lead to high cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood pressure and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) which gives substance to the fact that a low carb diet can actually improve your health.
Did you know if you suffer from any of the sugar related conditions above research has shown that the same amount of sugar will put triple the amount of weight on you than it would somebody without the condition. Frightening isn’t it?
Another fact is that the average lifespan of a person without diabetes is 8 years longer that a person with diabetes.
Here’s 5 Steps On How To Join The Low Carb Diet The Healthy Way!
1. Cut the carb’s!
Start with total elimination of refines sugar and refined carbs. They are by far the worst culprits in your diet and also the most likely to be converted into fats. It is a little more tricky when coming to the non refined carbs.
Most fruit and fruit juices are a real problem for a low carb diet.
Apart from soybeans most other beans contain more than 50% carbs.
Leafy vegetables are naturally low carb but stay as close to the garden as possible, no frozen or canned versions are good enough.
2. Choose you protein well!
It is best to get organic, free range and grass fed protein as much as possible. free range meat is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which is good for your heart. Nuts and seeds are good non-animal protein sources. Flaxseed and walnuts are particularly good since they contain omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Quench your thirst with out the carbs!
Green and black tea are at the top of the list because they actually improve insulin’s natural activity. Coffee in moderation is also acceptable but stay away from “diet” soft drinks, they don’t have carbs but the artificial ingredients they contain are bad for you. Alcohol in moderation is acceptable.
4. Don’t fall into the sweetener trap!
Aspartame, saccharine and other chemical sweeteners are carb free but should be eliminated anyway because all of them are bad for your health anyway.
To satisfy your sweet tooth herbal sweeteners like stevia is your best bet because they don’t contain any carbs.
5. Include these supplement for balance!
Apart from taking a good general multivitamin, there are a few supplements very specific to low carb dieters. Important - I believe that a multivitamin is an essential part of every one’s daily diet because of our modern food production methods.
Now because of the lack of fruit in the low carb diet you need to supplement with potassium (400-500 mg daily). Further because of the large amounts of phosphorous in proteins it is important that you supplement with a phosphorous free calcium (1000 mg daily), always combine some magnesium with this amount of calcium (400-500 mg daily).
If your not a tea drinker it is vital that you supplement with flavanoids as there are virtually none in a low carb diet. Flavanoids are vital for strong veins and arteries. Good herbal supplies of flavenoids can be found in Ginkgo and Echinacea.
Two vital low carb diet risks you must have checked.
1. Check with your doctor for bone loss and take the necessary calcium if necessary, unlikely but better to be safe.
2. Make sure that your stomach acid is up to the task for high protein digestion. While not many people have low stomach acid it is important for your well being that you have this information, consult a doctor skilled in natural healing methods.
